northwoods information & discussion about vacation areas in wisconsin, minnesota & michigan -- home webcams wheeler lake firelite webcam trump lake webcams tombstone pickerel snowcam boot lake webcams hillcrest lodge webcams northwoods discussion central lakewood wis complete weather info subscribe the northwoods information & discussion early february snowmobiling redux by greg on february 6, 2018 · 0 comments in family , oconto county , snowmobiling , weather , wheeler lake with the 5-6 inch snowfall we had last saturday (2/3/18) we now have the best riding conditions of this season. we put on about 200 miles over the weekend and the trails were very good. in places they were a bit rough from the heavy traffic but we won’t complain. the best trail we found was lmt4 out of wabeno, it was a pleasure to ride. the nst between lakewood and wabeno also got a bit rough in places and was showing too much gravel in others. again, a minor issue given the overall trail conditions at this time. { 0 comments } early february snowmobiling by greg on february 2, 2018 · 0 comments in family , snowmobiling , weather , wheeler lake f avorite youngest son had the day off school today so we decided we would spend it snowmobiling. since the temperature was well below zero this morning we waited until later in the morning to head out. we decided to head out the back side of wheeler lake, the trail hadn’t been groomed since the last snowfall so it was a bit rough. we headed past waubee lodge, turned right at intersection 654 and found the trail to be in surprisingly good condition. there was the occasional rock and stick to be found but overall the trail was in much better condition that was expected. we worked our way around to the back side of the mccaslin brook golf course and found those trails to be getting a bit thin with a fair amount of snirt in some areas which is typical for this part of the trail. we then worked our way back toward lakewood and hit the railroad grade/nst which had a fair amount of gravel on it. we had a quick lunch at the subway in lakewood and continued on the nst heading north past townsend. the trail from lakewood to townsend also had a fair amount of gravel showing with some fairly rough spots. a bit north of townsend we started working our way back toward wheeler lake. this portion of the trail system was in pretty good condition given the amount of snow on the ground. in total we rode about 50 miles today. some areas were pretty rough with some icy corners but overall it was a good ride. hopefully you were able to get out and ride the trails a bit this weekend. let us know how things were where you rode. { 0 comments } kids & cameras by greg on july 31, 2015 · 4 comments in family , fishing , wheeler lake we’ve got a longish weekend in the northwoods this week. headed up on thursday afternoon with plenty of time to get some fishing in. two hours and one rock bass later we headed in. on the way back our youngest son (13) insists on borrowing my phone to take a picture. i informed him it was too dark to take a good picture but eventually relented. 5 minutes later he hands my phone back with these pictures on it. he did the editing, including the borders, on my phone. my phone does borders, who knew? click the images to enlarge. { 4 comments } our memorial day weekend finished with a bang! nearly… by greg on may 29, 2012 · 0 comments in family , weather , wheeler lake but we are undeterred. the thunderstorms rolling through northern wisconsin did a number on us this past memorial day weekend. sunday morning about 3:15am we were jolted out of bed by an incredibly loud bang. we looked out the window and saw that one of our trees, only 30-40 feet from our bedroom, had been hit by lightning. our big hemlock is going to be firewood soon. thankfully we have a number of large trees in the front yard but we still hate a lose a nice old tree. why the huge pine towering another 50 feet in the air adjacent the hemlock didn’t get hit is a mystery to us. as you may have noticed, the wheeler lake webcams and weather information have not been updating since sunday morning. along with our tree, the lightening strike has also taken out a tv, dvr, dsl modem, wireless router, electronic thermostat, multiple webcams, the weather monitoring system and likely more. much of this equipment was protected by multiple ups devices. incredibly the power never went out and the phones still work. it would seem an emp sent by the lightning strike is to blame. we are now divining the secrets of effectively dealing with our insurance company over the loss. have you ever had to deal with your insurance company over a lightning stike?
